Charles og Ray Eames var et amerikansk arkitekt- og designerpar, banebrytende innen begge fagene, og ansees i dag åvære moderne ikoner. Paret traff hverandre ved Cranbrook Academy of Art, hvor de ogsåomgikk andre designlegender som Eero Saarinen.
Paret Eames syn påbåde design og arkitektur var veldig moderne, og det er verd ånevne at Chales ble tvunget til åforlate Washington University, hvor han studerte før han kom til Cranbrook, fordi, som en professor uttrykte det: "His views were too modern."
Charles Eames ble født i 1907 i St. Louis, Missouri. Hans interesse for ingeniørvitenskap og arkitektur vokser seg stor i tidlig alder. Etter at han blir tvunget til åforlate Washington University, starter Charles i 1930 sitt eget arkitektkontor, hvor han utforsker grensene for design, noe som fører til en invitasjon til Cranbrook Academy of Art i Michigan. Charles innovative design gjør ham til slutt til leder for designavdelingen.
Ray Kaiser Eames ble født i 1912 i Sacramento, California. I ungdommen studerer hun maleri i New York under ledelse av Hans Hofmann. Senere slutter hun seg til Cranbrook Academy, hvor hun møter sin fremtidige mann Charles Eames samt den framstående formgiveren Eero Saarinen. Sammen forbereder de tre kunst for Museum of Modern Art i New York. I 1949 gifter Charles og Ray seg og fortsetter åskape moderne møbeldesign sammen.
I 1948 designet paret et hus til seg selv, The Eames House, i Los Angeles, som i dag regnes inn blant den moderne arkitekturens viktigste verk. Paret har designet et flertall møbler, og Eames Lounge Chair fra 1956 klassifiseres i dag som en av verdens kanskje mest kjente møbler. Andre fremstående verk er Eames plastic Chair, Occasional Table, Eames Elephant og den lekende Hang it All-hengeren, som alle produseres av Vitra. Charles og Ray Eames blir tildelt flere utmerkelser opp igjennom årene, i 1979 tildeles de den prestisjefulle Royal Gold Medal av Royal Institute of British Architects - en utmerkelse som verdens mest innflytelsesrike arkitekter har mottatt siden 1848. I 1985 mottar paret utmerkelsen The Most Influential Designer of the 20th Century av Industrial Designers Society of America.
